Dr. Monty Nelson, Ph.D.

Dr. Monty Nelson has been registered as a psychologist in Alberta since 1998, and later registered in Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, and Saskatchewan. He is currently working in full-time private practice in Edmonton performing psychological and neuropsychological assessments in Edmonton and across Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, and even Nunavut.  Clientele that he works with include those adults and teens with developmental disabilities, brain injuries, prenatal alcohol exposure, epilepsy, psychiatric disorders, neuro-degenerative disorders, attentional disorders, medical conditions and emotional and personality disorders. His primary interests are in clinical assessments of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), learning and developmental disabilities, dementia as well as guardianship and trusteeship evaluations. He has numerous peer reviewed research publications, presents at research and clinical conferences in local, national, and international locations, and even co-edited a book entitled Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in Adults: Ethical and Legal Perspectives with Justice Marguerite Trussler.


He has done lectures and workshops internationally, nationally, and locally. These have been for various classes at the University of Alberta, the Public Guardians of Canada, Alberta Mental Health, Norquest College, Concordia University College, Capital Health Authority, and other hospitals and facilities throughout Alberta and the NWT. Most frequent topics of presentation include the neuropsychology of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, neuropsychological assessment of adults and children, the guardianship and trusteeship evaluations, abnormal and normal changes in aging, as well as other assessment and clinical topics of interest.


Dr. Nelson obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Alberta in 1999. He worked with Alberta Mental Health (Alberta Hospital Ponoka) for several years in the departments of geriatric psychiatry and telepsychology. He has been involved in supervising Provisional Psychologists, doing some teaching and supervision of graduate students through the University of Alberta's educational psychology graduate program, and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the department. He also spent six years on the College of Alberta Psychologists Practice Review Committee, works from time to time as an acting Complaints Director, provides expert opinions for The College, and even is a practice mentor to other psychologists who are under disciplinary action.


At the current time, Dr. Nelson is a member of the College of Alberta Psychologists, the Psychologist's Association of Alberta, National Academy of Neuropsychology, Canadian and American Psychological Associations, and the Saskatchewan, NWT and Nunavut Psychologist’s registry. He is certified as an expert witness in neuropsychological assessment in family and provincial court, as well as the court of Queen’s Bench in Alberta and Saskatchewan.


Through his company Nelson Psychological Services, Dr. Nelson also contracts other psychologists and psychometrists to provide a range of psychological and assessment services to those who may be interested.
