Magdalena Kirchen, lic. phil. I


Ms. Magdalena Kirchen was registered as a Psychologist in 1987 and has worked in a private practice setting since 1990. Originally from Switzerland, she received a master’s degree (Lizentiat) in applied psychology (with a strong emphasis on clinical psychology) from the University of Zürich, Switzerland. As a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Alberta, she completed the required doctoral level course work in counselling and assessment psychology, as well as a hierarchical series of five courses in pharmacopsychology. She has presented and/or published on selected topics in the area of chronic nonmalignant pain, depression, pharmacopsychology and addiction. Ms. Kirchen is registered as a Registered Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists; she is a member of the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta, the Canadian Psychological Association, the International Council of Psychologists, and the German association for person-centered psychotherapists (Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Gesprächspsychotherapie).

Ms. Kirchen is experienced in various areas of psychological counselling and assessment. She has worked with people struggling to cope with stress, depression and anxiety (personal, family, work and/or school related) and performed numerous assessments in these areas. She also has worked extensively with individuals facing the long-term consequences of injury and illness; her work includes assessments and individual and group therapy. Specifically, she has focused on pain and stress management, adjustment counselling (e.g., posttraumatic stress, depression, anxiety), career planning and vocational rehabilitation, often in consultation to, or on contract with, government agencies or private organizations (such as insurance companies).

Throughout her career, Ms. Kirchen has had the opportunity to work with individuals of various cultural and educational backgrounds; her background includes cross-cultural work with immigrants and New Canadians. She is fluent in English, French and German.
